Tom Kummer, a Swiss journalist, is well known as “The Bad Boy of German Journalism” (New York Times) for fabricating many of his stories and interviews of Hollywood Stars. With “Nina & Tom” he has crafted a remarkable love story out of his thirty-year marriage. This story has a rarely seen authenticity that takes us through the heights and depths of an extraordinary love relationship of two extreme characters.
We go with Nina and Tom on a radical trip through time, covering more than thirty years, from Barcelona, to Berlin, to Los Angeles.
Tom has never seen anyone like Nina: tall and androgynous, she looks like a gangster and takes no prisoners. Whether chasing love, sex, or drugs, she’s always searching for a sense of identity. The total opposite of Tom, who hides his scared self behind an invented persona, writing, making art, staging scenes, and spinning yarns that only sound like reality. He loves provocation, setting off explosives, and will go on to cause an infamous media scandal. But his unconditional love for Nina is the greatest adventure of his life.

Tom Kummer’s auto-fictional novel “Nina & Tom” is “the biggest love story since Love Story.” It covers the love at first sight that develops between these two intense characters in Barcelona in 1983, their love-hate relationship and shared bohemian life afterwards in the art and party capital of Berlin before the fall of the Wall in 1989, Tom’s media scandal in 2000 surrounding his faked interviews with Hollywood stars, up to their creation of a family and Nina’s battle with cancer and her death in Los Angeles in 2014.
“We’re angels from hell.” Tom says to Nina. Her lips tremble: “Tom, how are we going to live now?”
Only death can end Nina and Tom’s love. Through their story, we lose our fear of dying. Death is placed in direct connection to love, lust, and freedom. Up to the final breath.
